In Albert Coates Lane at QV Melbourne, Bassike has built a loyal following on pieces designed to last. We sat down with Daisy and Margie from the Bassike team to hear about the label, the new spring/summer collection, and their life in the precinct.
How would you describe Bassike to someone who has never come across the label before?
Bassike is an Australian-owned label built on considered design and serious attention to detail. "We focus really highly on our fabrication and all the quality that goes into our pieces," says Daisy. Core pieces are designed to be worn across multiple seasons, layer easily and mix with one another, and as Margie puts it, they're "meant to be kept in your wardrobe for a long time."
How would you describe the Bassike customer?
Bassike customers are after quality. Many know the products are produced here in Melbourne, and they care about supporting Australian labels. Plenty also know about the brand’s B Corp certification, which refers to social and environmental performance and as Margie puts it, “they know that what they’re purchasing is positively impacting their community.” Additionally, design keeps them coming back. They’re drawn to Bassike’s considered design, where effortless core pieces sit alongside fun, unexpected styles that push things a little further. One QV client wears Bassike pieces from ten years ago alongside pieces from the new collection. For Daisy, that’s the joy of it: “being able to explore your wardrobe throughout seasons with the same brand.”
What is the mood of the new season collection?
Daisy and Margie describe the season as a "no rules approach,” with silhouettes, textures and fabrications mixed and layered freely. Lighter fabrics sit alongside heavier textiles, which suits Melbourne's ever unpredictable spring. The shapes are structured but comfortable and, in Margie's words, "super easy and super relaxed, but also can be styled and playful."
Which new season pieces do you love from the Spring 26 collection?
The first pick is the Wool Tailored Jacket in a virgin Italian blend. "The structure is just gorgeous. It gives you this beautiful shape," says Margie. The second is the Crushed Cotton Box Pleat Skirt which has returned in a check, crisp white and black, and now burnt orange. Daisy loves it for "the way the skirt sits, how easily it can be styled."
Is there a particular fabric or construction detail that sets Bassike apart?
It starts with the organic cotton jersey, made from a yarn unique to Bassike and knitted in Melbourne. "That's how we started as a business," says Margie, and regulars come back to replace worn-out favourites in exactly the same cut. Japanese selvedge denim is another standout for Daisy, because "there's nothing better than a perfect cut of jeans." Then there's the pin stitch pant, a staple since day one that some clients own ten or eleven pairs, a testament to how versatile and enduring the style has proven to be.
Why did Bassike choose QV as their home in Melbourne's CBD?
Margie sees a natural alignment between Bassike and its QV neighbours. “We’re extremely design focused, and I feel like all the other stores are as well,” she says. That shared focus goes deeper than good-looking shopfronts. It’s not just about the store design and interiors. It’s about the substance of what every store is selling. For her, it adds up to a precinct of labels that share the same values.
Are there any other stores you would recommend at QV?
Daisy and Margie shop Aesop, Incu and July, and rate the Food Hall too. They love how each store tells its own story through its design, which makes the lanes feel like a discovery. "Just to step off Swanston Street, you kind of feel like you're in this little haven."
